A book a day, or my year of reading dangerously...

As of February 14th 2009, I have decided to read a book a day, for a year: my year of reading dangerously! Click below for updates. (UPDATE: I am dangerously behind AND WILL RETURN TO CATCH UP IN SEPTEMBER...gulp).

February 14th. Happy Valentines Day! The perfect day to embrace, proclaim and commit, to passionately, recklessly, openly and shamelessly shout those words 'I luv you, words! Be mine! '

So, today is the day, I have decided to take the plunge. I am going to tackle a book a day, for a whole year.

This insane idea comes from Fifecat: you can find her inspiring blog here, if you want to join us or laugh at us. She came up with this idea 128 days and 126 books ago, and has this to say about the experience so far:

Is it possible to read a book a day, every day? I'm three months into my challenge now and I would say that for me, no, it isn't possible to read a whole book EVERY single day. Real life does get in the way, or the book is just too long to complete in the evening after work. However, it looks like it is possible to read an AVERAGE of one book a day for a year, because you can catch up on your reading on weekends and holidays. So in those terms, I'm on track - and my reading choices are still eclectic!

I came across 'A book a day...' one week ago, and decided I wanted to join Fifecat on her year of reading dangerously. This is why the Internet is so cool, you encounter the best people and become inspired. It has taken me a week wussing out dangerously to get going, but I have been spurred on by fervent wise words:

Welcome Lis! I am so excited to hear of someone enthusiastic or mad enough to join me in this nutty plan ... Short books work, but unfortunately you will find that a lot of the books you want to read are LONG! You can catch up on quieter days though, unless you make your rules really strict and you always have to finish a book each day ... Keep us posted with a link here if you start blogging about your book a day! *rubs hands gleefully*

So.... let the enthusiastic nutty madness begin. My rules are not very strict at all, in fact, I am going to be taking it gently because I know my life will get in the way (thankfully), so I'll opening up the challenge to include audio/visual adaptations of books to give me an excuse to be lazy yet look like I'm making progress. Clever, eh? I love films and maybe watch 3 or 4 a week anyway (is that bad? It sounds obsessive, reading it back), so this might save my sanity during the next 365 days. Maybe.

A BOOK A DAY: THE RULES.
What counts as a book?
  • A Book: paper or virtual. Poetry, Prose, Fiction, drama, autobiography, anything at all.
  • An Audio Book - mp3 recordings (might need to save up for an ipod first, though)
Adaptations of a book, such as ...
  • Film adaptations - short, long, animated, etc.. I would also say TV adaptations, but I don't have a TV. Or an ipod (it's sad, I know).
  • Any type of literary performance or adaptation, in medium. Theatre would be nice, if someone wants to take me out and buy me a liqueur at half time (that's what they call the break bit, right?). The Wasteland in Tap dance, Waiting for Godot in mime, and so on and so forth.
What do you reckon? Does this sound reasonable? I can always read short books or watch short films during my busiest times, surely? Reading recommendations are welcome...

You can find my Reading List (and read list!) HERE.

OK. eek.

It's so great that you have taken the plunge! And I love your book as a heart image. Your film adaptations idea is cunning yet valid! I find myself that plays are nice and short to read when needs must, but are (usually) beautifully constructed at the same time. I don't think poetry works though - there's fewer words but they require a lot more thinking about ... I'm very impressed with your choices so far; I think you may very well be much more intellectual than me *wonders if Heat magazine would count as a book of the day*

I am so very happy to have taken the plunge, too!

Thankyou for this awesome idea.

People keep calling me bonkers, but I just point them to your blog, so I can prove I am not... Will this work, do you think?!!

The film adaptations idea is a bit cheeky, but I love screenwriting (or any lit-adaptations, really), so what the hell!

Interesting point about poetry - I can't wait to see how it goes - I wonder if the same thing will happen when reading flash fiction collections (or short shorts or microfiction or whatever people choose to call them)?

And I'm pretty sure I would count Heat as literature (hell, I count Hamlet 2 the movie as literature) - I am also, sadly, sure I am not intellectual: I have around 3000 war-fiction books sitting next to my single unread Dostoevsky...

The Great Escape *sigh*...or any book with a determined soldier (ideally holding a gun or a spade)on the front...

I think this proves something about me, probably not good, but true all the same!
